Which interpretations become dominant?

Suppose historians debate:

“Why did the Civil War occur?”

Interpretation A says:

Slavery was central.

Interpretation B says:

Constitutional disputes were central.

Interpretation C says:

Economic interests were central.

If A appears in 80% of textbooks and scholarly discussions, A has become a dominant interpretation.

That dominance is an outcome of the scholarly process.
