When the proposition can often be your own reasoned explanation, particularly when it is a straightforward consequence then you do not need to pretend that a historian said it if you are the one formulating it.

The important thing is simply to signal the status correctly when it is not already established—for example:

“This suggests that…”

or

“A plausible consequence was…”

rather than presenting a disputed causal interpretation as an established historical fact
