Scholarly process
“An outcome is what eventually emerges from the scholarly process.”
Scholarly process means the sequence through which knowledge is:
chosen and researched and written and evaluated and published and circulated and cited and taught and recognized.
For example:
Step 1 — Question
A historian decides:
“I want to study colonial taxation.”
Step 2 — Research
They examine:
archives;
government documents;
letters;
newspapers;
previous scholarship.
Step 3 — Writing
They formulate an argument.
Step 4 — Evaluation
They submit the paper to a journal.
Reviewers evaluate it.
Step 5 — Publication
If accepted, it becomes part of the scholarly literature.
Step 6 — Citation
Other historians may cite it.
Step 7 — Teaching
Eventually the interpretation may enter textbooks or university courses.
That whole chain is part of the scholarly process.
