What are political rights, and what does “respected” mean?

Political rights

Rights connected with participation in government and political life.

Examples include:

  • voting;
  • standing for election;
  • holding public office;
  • participating in political organizations;
  • petitioning government;
  • in relevant contexts, serving on juries.

“Respected”

Here it does not mean merely:

people have a good opinion of you.

It means:

the legal and political system actually recognizes and protects your right.

For example, if the law gives someone the right to vote but authorities systematically prevent that person from voting because of race, the formal right exists, but its exercise is not adequately respected.
