Misunderstands primary sources

Suppose a letter says:

“I oppose slavery.”

The scholar interprets it as:

“Lincoln wanted immediate racial equality in every social and political respect.”

That may be an unjustified interpretation of the source.

The problem isn't merely insufficient evidence; it is incorrect interpretation of the evidence.
