Why do lawyers and journalists prefer "facts"?

Suppose a court is deciding a case.

The judge asks:

What are the facts?

not

What is the truth?

Why?

Because courts evaluate evidence.

Evidence establishes facts.

Those established facts are then used to reach conclusions.

Similarly, journalists try to verify facts before publication.
