"Unnatural historical construct"

Polanyi does not mean "bad."

He means:

The free market did not arise naturally by itself.

It was historically created through political and legal decisions.

Example:

Imagine a forest.

Trees grow naturally.

Now imagine a city.

The city exists because people deliberately planned it.

Polanyi says market society resembles the city, not the forest.
