In his seminal 1944 book, The Great Transformation,
Karl Polanyi argued that the free-market economy is an unnatural, historical construct. He claimed that "fictitious commodities"—specifically land, labor, and money—cannot be subjected to pure market forces without devastating society, which forces governments to intervene to protect citizen.
