Because academic writing acknowledges where knowledge comes from.

Imagine writing:

The earth orbits the sun.

Almost no reader doubts it.

Yet in historical scholarship, citations are not only about persuading skeptical readers. They also situate your work within an ongoing scholarly conversation.
