"Labor, land, and money became commodities"
Polanyi calls these fictitious commodities.
Example:
Ordinary commodity
A chair.
Someone manufactures it specifically to sell it.
It is a true commodity.
Labor
Your capacity to work.
You were not created for sale.
Yet under capitalism,
you sell your labor for wages.
Thus labor is treated as if it were a commodity.
Land
Land is part of nature.
No one produced the earth.
Yet land is bought and sold.
Money
Money is created by financial institutions and states.
It is not produced like wheat.
Yet it is traded like a commodity.
