Where do citation chains end?
They do not continue forever.
Researchers stop when they reach one of several points.
For example
Book (2020)
↓
Article (2008)
↓
Book (1985)
↓
Parliamentary debates (1865)
↓
Official legislative record
At that point,
you have reached the original historical evidence.
Or
Book A cites Book B.
Book B cites Book C.
Book C introduces the idea without citing anyone else.
The chain naturally ends there.
The purpose is not to chase references forever but to identify the foundations of a claim.
