So even for an original interpretation, evidence is still valuable—not because originality is prohibited, but because historical scholarship normally expects interpretations to be supported by evidence, whether direct (documents, debates, correspondence) or indirect (patterns in the historical record, comparisons, and engagement with existing scholarship).
