"Self-proving truths"

A self-proving truth would be a claim that supposedly requires no argument or evidence.

Example:

"Democracy is obviously the best system."

That is not self-proving. It requires reasons and evidence.

Likewise,

"Present stewardship should always outweigh ancient occupancy"

is not self-proving. It requires justification because reasonable people can defend competing principles such as self-determination, treaty obligations, continuous historical connection, or international legal recognition.

So, in scholarship, controversial normative claims are expected to be argued for, not merely asserted.
