Mathematics helps clarify assumptions and derive implications.
Example
Suppose an economist assumes:
- every firm seeks to maximize profit,
- consumers prefer lower prices.
A mathematical model allows the economist to derive implications such as:
- what price is likely in equilibrium,
- how demand changes if prices rise,
- how taxes affect output.
Mathematics does not decide whether the assumptions are true. It shows what logically follows if those assumptions are accepted.
