a conclusion drawn from evidence.

Not every inference is equally good.

Example of a reasonable inference

A diary says

"Workers arrived more quickly after legal restrictions ended."

Inference:

Removing legal restrictions probably increased labor mobility.

Reasonable.

Example of an unreasonable inference

The same diary says

"Workers arrived more quickly."

Inference:

Therefore every politician secretly wanted capitalism.

That inference goes far beyond the evidence.
