• is still being tested.

Example

Industrialization encouraged legal reforms.

A theory

is a much broader explanatory framework supported by substantial evidence.

Examples include

• Darwin's theory of evolution,
• Marx's theory of capitalism,
• Weber's theory of rational capitalism.

A hypothesis may eventually become part of a broader theory if repeatedly supported.
