What is “key”? What is a “simple story”?

When I said:

“The key is to avoid turning the emergence of something into a simple story…”

Key means the most important point to keep in mind at any stage of the argument.

And a simple story here means a causal explanation that contains too few steps and qualifications and that makes the formulation the crude story that I am cautioning against.
