The disagreement need not be:
“The slaveholder thinks Black people should be slaves, while the former slave thinks they should be free.”
Slavery has already been abolished.
The disagreement can instead concern:
What should legal freedom actually entail?
For example, a former slaveholder could accept:
“You are legally free and can work for me under a contract.”
while a formerly enslaved person could expect:
“My freedom should also give me a realistic opportunity to become economically independent.”
the former slaveholder might recognize that the formerly enslaved person lacks land and capital and therefore has little ability to achieve that independence.
So the contestation can involve both normative expectations and material constraints.
