“Social and institutional legacies of slavery”

Social legacies

These are social consequences or patterns inherited from the period of slavery.

Examples:

  • ideas of Black inferiority;
  • racial prejudice;
  • established social expectations concerning Black labor;
  • patterns of racial interaction.

Institutional legacies

These are patterns within institutions that were shaped by slavery and could influence later institutions.

For example:

  • labor arrangements;
  • property distribution;
  • political structures;
  • legal practices;
  • local systems of racial control.

Again, this does not mean that the institution of slavery itself legally continued.

It means:

its effects could outlast its legal existence.
