“Social and institutional legacies of slavery”
Social legacies
These are social consequences or patterns inherited from the period of slavery.
Examples:
- ideas of Black inferiority;
- racial prejudice;
- established social expectations concerning Black labor;
- patterns of racial interaction.
Institutional legacies
These are patterns within institutions that were shaped by slavery and could influence later institutions.
For example:
- labor arrangements;
- property distribution;
- political structures;
- legal practices;
- local systems of racial control.
Again, this does not mean that the institution of slavery itself legally continued.
It means:
its effects could outlast its legal existence.
