“Continuing racial hierarchy” — one qualification

“I think continuing racial hierarchy was over because of emancipation.”

If by racial hierarchy as a legal status of slavery you mean that Black people were no longer legally placed in the slave/non-slave hierarchy, yes, emancipation fundamentally destroyed that legal hierarchy.

But if “racial hierarchy” means the broader social ranking of Black and white people, then it did not necessarily disappear in 1865.

This is why we need to distinguish:

Legal racial hierarchy

Black people can legally be enslaved; white people can legally own them.

Emancipation abolished this.

Social racial hierarchy

Black people are regarded as socially inferior to white people.

Emancipation did not automatically abolish this.

Economic hierarchy

One population emerges from slavery with almost no accumulated property while another possesses substantial property.

Emancipation did not automatically abolish this either.
