"What if neglected interpretations are unknown?"

If an interpretation is completely unknown, it cannot be evaluated.

One reason scholarship values debate, archival research, translation, and publication is precisely to make alternative interpretations visible.

However, the mere possibility that alternatives exist does not by itself show that the dominant interpretation is wrong.

A dominant interpretation is challenged most effectively when someone brings forward the neglected evidence or neglected argument and makes it available for examination.
