Abolition was not a single legal event after which all consequences of slavery disappeared immediately.

There was a legal transformation, but society and institutions had to deal with:

  • existing relationships;
  • existing legal practices;
  • existing racial assumptions;
  • existing economic arrangements;
  • rights that had previously been denied.

Perrone explicitly describes ending slavery as a “long and complex process” involving not merely granting rights but also removing disabilities created by bondage.
