Burden of empire: Protecting the people from the people themselves
·       Refusal of west to acknowledge the victory of Islamists in Egypt is the refusal of sensible elders to grant the unwise wish of children.

“Every empire, however, tells itself and the world that it is unlike all other empires, that its mission is not to plunder and control but to educate and liberate."

(Los Angeles Times, July 20, 2003)”
― Edward Said

Allah’s Apostle (pbuh) said, “Whoever has oppressed another person concerning his reputation or anything else, he should beg him to forgive him before the Day of Resurrection when there will be no money (to compensate for wrong deeds), but if he has good deeds, those good deeds will be taken from him according to his oppression which he has done, and if he has no good deeds, the sins of the oppressed person will be loaded on him.”Volume 3, Book 43, Number 629: Sahih Bukhari.

In order to discourage envy, the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said:
“Do not look to those above you. Look to those below you, as it will more likely remind you of Allah’s favors bestowed on you.” [Saheeh al-Bukharee and Saheeh Muslim]
On another occasion, he (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said: “If one of you looks at someone wealthier and better built than him, he should also look at someone of lower standard than himself.” [Saheeh Muslim]
Abu Hurayrah (razi Allahu anhu) narrated that the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said:
“By Allah, in Whose Hand is my soul, you will never enter Paradise until you believe. And you will not believe unless you love one another. May I tell you something that if you do, you may love one another? Spread Salaam amongst yourselves.”
Ibn Abdul-Barr (may Allah be pleased with him) said:“This proves that Salaam can lift hatred and produce love.” [Saheeh Muslim]
A noteworthy hadith:
It is better to sit alone than in company with the bad; and it is better still to sit with the good than alone. It is better to speak to a seeker of knowledge than to remain silent; but silence is better than idle words.” (Bukhari)

Column
column is a recurring piece or article in a newspaper, magazine or other publication, where a writer expresses his/her own opinion in few columns allotted to him/her by the newspaper organisation. Columns are written by columnists. What differentiates a column from other forms of journalism is that is a regular feature in a publication – written by the same writer or reporter and usually on the same subject area or theme each time – and that it typically, but not universally, contains the author's opinion or point of view.

Types

Some types of newspaper columns are:
·         Advice column

·         Food column
·         Gossip column
·         Humor column or causerie

An editorial is a piece of writing usually written by the editor or senior staff at a magazine/newspaper/regular newsletter. It usually encompasses the beliefs of the paper/magazine as a whole.
A column is a piece written on the same subject but by a person who specifically writes only that column, think of the Agony Aunt pages in some papers, or the showbiz section.
An article is a separate piece usually followed up and written by a reporter, journalist or guest author. It's usually about something specific which is not covered on a regular basis, or to do with what's happening in the general news world.

To begin with, one has to understand what editorial stands for. It is a newspaper article that tends to contain and explain author’s ideas. This piece of writing can be on any topic, but, as statistics show, most often it deals with social issues. Just like in your research paper, you have to provide enough credible evidence to support your opinion.
Detailed research has to be conducted ahead to discover a particular point of view an author wishes to argue. An editorial must contain not only problems but possible solutions to them. For instance, when writing about the issue associated with obese population, the writer should end up giving specific recommendations on how to deal with this problem. Moreover, his message may be turned to both those who suffer from this disorder and healthcare professionals who have to handle it. Often, the authors speak to the local governments hoping to motivate them to act. As you can see, preparing an editorial has a lot in common with writing an essay or research paper. So, in case you were good at writing in your school, college, or university papers, it would make no problem for you to come up with any writing piece, including an interesting editorial.

An editorial is an expression of the position of the newspaper's editors or editorial board or publisher on an issue. It's generally written by an editor or member of the editorial board. The tradition has been to frame the editorial using first person plural, we. Editorials are not generally signed although there have been some exceptions over the years.
A column is written by a columnist, editor or other select individual on a topic of their choosing. It is the expression of one person's opinion or viewpoint and is generally written using first person singular or third person singular. Columns are signed by the author.
An article is nonfictional writing within a publication. Articles can be further divided into news writing, feature writing, sports writing, and opinion writing. Editorials and columns fall under the heading of opinion writing. News and feature articles are generally presented as objective forms. Sports writing is supposed to be objective, but it isn't completely without bias, thus the separate category. Articles can be further divided into the various sections of the newspaper: business, lifestyle, transportation, housing, etc. Articles may or may not be signed depending on the policy of the publication and are generally written in third person.

An editorial is the "official" position of the newspaper. The editorial board meets and discusses an issue important to the community and then decides what stance the paper will take on it (i.e. endorsing candidates, supporting or opposing legislation, etc.). One person on the board is drafted to write the editorial, and the editorial is published unsigned (with no byline).

A column is the voice of one person, not the newspaper. A column may take an opinion on something, or speak generally about experiences or issues. A column is always run with a byline and usually a photo of the writer.

Article is usually on a well-defined topic or topics that are related in some way, such as a factual account of a newsworthy event. The writer is objective and shows all sides to an issue. The sources for this news story are identified and are reliable.

An editorial appears on the editorial page, and represents the newspaper's position on a certain subject.  Example:  The Daily Gazette endorses John Smith for mayor, instead of Jane Doe.  Or:  The Daily Gazette believes that Congress should pass a law that prohibits [whatever].  An editorial is generally written by a newspaper's editorial board.  It is not signed.

A column is a personal opinion piece.  It usually appears on the same page, in the same spot, on the same days of the week.  It always has the columnist's name, and usually includes the columnist's picture.  Unlike a news story, a columnist is free to give an opinion.  A person who is a columnist usually has many years of experience covering the issues, or has a lot of expertise in them. They use their knowledge of the subject, and their contacts in the community, to write about a topic, and they often come to a conclusion.  The reader is free to agree or disagree.  There are also humor columnists, advice columnists, etc.

An editorial is written by a staff editor and generally deals with topical matters of national and international importance. They discuss both the sides of an issue and express a conclusion. There are other write ups on the editorial page; editorial proper, a middle which can be a humourously critical about personalities or life in general, invited articles from people whose opinions are valued by readers (so called influential persons, like novelists, writes, civil servants past and present etc.)
Column is written by a person and is published on special editions like Sunday Editions. Articles by Shobha De, Twinkle Khanna, Sagarika Ghose are the examples of 'column'
Articles are writings of free lance writes on various subjects, travel, adventure, philosophy, management, education, religion, tolerance, literally, anything under the sun

An editorial is a news paper or magazine article usually composed or written by the editor and reflects current issues. It can be on any subject but by the editor. Column is just a vertical division in a newspaper or magazine where the content of guest writers (free lance) or employed writers of that newspaper is published. Like a column on cricket in sports section by Dhoni. An article is any piece of writing about any subject. Like an article on poverty, tax etc. It's like a report or information.

Ankit Tripathi, write to express, write to create.

While the other answers have correctly define what column and article are, I have something more to add in terms of Editorial.

Editorial is a comprehensive summary of a particular topic and what "should" (not could, it is an opinion) be the future course of action.
