"The Crowd Always wins’’ (September 23,2011 Newsweek
Pakistan page 21)
BY Mehren
Zehra-Malik
‘’Chaudhry
Nisar Ali Khan…. held a press conference to ‘prove’ that just because his wife
and children have been outted as U.S nationals, he is not pro-American’…..Pakistani
politicians, and even the Army, play to the gallery, tapping and stoking anti-America sentiment
to gain popularity and earn their national stripes. This is hardly breaking
news. It was surprising, however, to learn that the often straight-shooting
Khan, whose anti-USA speeches are the stuff of legend plays the same game….Khan
reserved the right to criticize U.S actions to remain politically credible….. Khan
can still learn a thing or two about this game from the Army which has been at
the receiving end of public disenchantment with the U.S since 9/11. In the choice
between survival and course correction an Army instinctively averse to self-reflection
chose to harass U.S. diplomats, cripple aid projects by refusing visas to
Americans,…..Anti-America sentiment is a multipurpose tool available to
everyone: politicians, generals, the media and, of course, the mullah… for khan
like others, it is age-olds struggle: the roar of the crow pulls them in one direction,
the voice of their conscience in another. The crowd always wins.
If we go by the logic of Mehren
Zehra-Malik, we can conclude: one forfeits the right to criticize if he has
taken aid or citizen ship of U.S.A. Friend (America) remains friend as long as
he does not help and ceases to be friend when he does as he becomes master. Slave
(recipient of aid, Pakistan) cannot criticize master; therefore Army or politicians
have no right to criticize (but they do so to remain credible or earn stripes) but
this is against the voice of conscience.
Pakistan receive aids (that is to be paid back
with heavy interest) and in return serve American interests (provide logistics
support to American army and safe access to Afghanistan)
Quaid-Azam and Gandhi were the
subjects of British India (they could be termed as slave) but they led the campaign
against British rule. Qaid-a-Azam tapped education (that he received from the University
of Britain) against Britain. Unfortunately there was no intellectual to write article
underscoring the unethical, unsavory and illogical practices of using education
against the country that was the source of education or running campaign against
Britain rule despite being its subjects.
Noam Chomsky is American and
speaks against American imperialism, he must learn from the logic of Mehren
Zehra Malik.
The byline of News week says: The
views expressed here are her (Zahra Malik) own.
When an author does not want to
criticize (he does not have moral courage or cannot afford the monetary cost of
criticizing) he quotes someone else to speak though him: saying without saying anything
himself.
Permitting the publication of an
article implies implicit endorsement.
Wow Sir such an amazing piece of writing
ReplyDeletethe point u have mentioned in this article "Pakistan receive aids (that is to be paid back with heavy interest)" it points out to the debt which Pakistan had taken from the USA, therefore, definitely it would be impossible for the politicians and Army to lead any king of campaign against the USA because now their right to speak against USA has forfeited and they also have to keep their status as "credible".
