My central distinction is important, and I will revise the wording accordingly. I am not arguing that industrialization merely increased the quantity of skills that already existed. I am arguing that industrialization created new kinds of skill requirements because machinery, factory organization and industrial production changed the nature of work itself. My comparison with AI makes the distinction clear: the ability to perform a task before AI and the ability to perform it effectively in an AI-enabled environment may involve different competencies, not merely more of the same skill.
